So, you’ve taken a pregnancy test and the results are positive. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or anxious about the results, it’s completely normal. The one thing we can tell you is that a positive pregnancy test doesn’t always mean you have a viable pregnancy. At Real Options, we can perform a free, limited ultrasound which will tell us some vital information about your pregnancy. No matter what, we are here to support you.
What you need to know about ultrasounds
What is an ultrasound?
An ultrasound is a painless procedure that utilizes high-frequency sound waves to produce an image of the inside of the uterus. Using an ultrasound wand, a technician is able to see the pregnancy in its beginning stages.
What does an ultrasound do?
Our limited ultrasounds are able to determine whether a pregnancy is viable and how many weeks a woman has been pregnant. Viability is based on whether a technician can detect a fetal heartbeat and if the pregnancy is developing in the uterus. If the pregnancy is developing outside of the uterus, possibly in the fallopian tubes, then it is called an ectopic pregnancy. Additionally, when a technician is unable to locate a fetal heartbeat, there is a strong chance for a natural miscarriage. For both an ectopic pregnancy or possible miscarriage, we will refer you for immediate medical attention.
Why do I need an ultrasound?
Ultrasounds are a necessary step in determining whether you are actually pregnant. An ultrasound can give you the information stated above, but also gives you proof of pregnancy, which is needed to obtain certain government assistance. Additionally, if you are considering abortion, an ultrasound is required to determine how far along you are – which dictates the price and type of procedure available. If you choose adoption or parenting as your pregnancy outcome, your ultrasound will give you an estimated due date.
If I do have a viable pregnancy, what’s next?
If we were able to detect a fetal heartbeat on the ultrasound and your pregnancy is developing normally, it’s time to start discussing your pregnancy options. You have three options for your unintended pregnancy: adoption, abortion or parenting. Each of these options requires careful consideration before making an ultimate decision. We offer pregnancy options coaching, where we can explore each of the options you have and discuss any questions or concerns. The staff at Real Options are here for you. Ultrasound scans are used to confirm the presence of a viable, uterine pregnancy. We do not use ultrasound to determine gender or diagnose abnormalities. Eligibility criteria apply.
